DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan, The New Children's Hospital of Michigan
Detroit, MI | 2017
Located at the heart of Detroit Medical Center's midtown campus, the new Children's Hospital of Michigan elevates the hospital's competitive position and transforms the delivery of pediatric healthcare in the region while creating a unified physical identity and gateway for the campus.
The foundation of the new Children's Hospital of Michigan is a six-story tower that alleviates significant capacity constraints across several key clinical areas. The tower has three treatment and diagnostic levels and three patient floors, all with single-patient rooms, including a 30-bed NICU and 48-bed PICU; radiology; and a lateral expansion for perioperative and emergency services.
The design of the tower unifies the hospital campus by leveraging the urban character of the site and integrating a large new building with a single prime entry. The new commons and concourse, with a distinctive curved wall of rainbow-colored glass and two-story arrival space joins the tower with the Carls and Main buildings.
Working with JWA Consulting, Shepley Bulfinch led an integrated facility design process that married principles of Lean operations with the architectural design. Feedback from the week-long workshops for each department was incorporated in the design response.
The new tower completes the hospital's strategic vision set forth in its master plan. As part of the implementation of the plan, Shepley Bulfinch completed the outpatient Specialty Center in 2012 and the renovation of clinical and office space in the Carls building in 2014.
