Illinois Wesleyan University, Hansen Student Center
Bloomington, IL | 2002
This project has transformed the existing Memorial Gymnasium into a vital center for the campus community. The 32,000 s.f. adaptive reuse of this Neo-Classical structure creates a variety of flexible interior and exterior environments to support student life and encourage interaction with faculty.
The program includes a central, two-story, sky-lit space, flexibly designed for a variety of uses, a coffee house, campus bookstore, convenience store, spaces for student organizations and student government, and a grille/bar that opens directly to a new west patio.
The existing building envelope has been fully restored, while the architectural vocabulary of the newly inserted mezzanine and program elements create a theatrical stage set. The two-story lobby is a beacon at night, attracting students and faculty and activating this important campus precinct.
