Philadelphia University, Kanbar Campus Center

Philadelphia, PA | 2006

Commanding the redesigned main campus, the Kanbar Campus Center is a catalyst for building community and fostering social and intellectual engagement. Its open design, with a wall of windows, captures the natural setting and makes events within visible from much of the campus. The Center brings together dining, retail, event, student organization, and student service spaces in a facility that unites campus life and programs. The building provides open, multi-use spaces, robust access to technology and incorporates sustainable strategies through its site development, material use, and energy-efficient system and enclosure design. The building is organized to create an interior and exterior “campus street,” connecting the academic precinct with recreation and athletic facilities. Its open interior connects space and activities on all levels. A pedestrian Arts Walk connects the Center with athletic facilities, academic buildings, and campus housing. The Center is named for Maurice S. Kanbar, ’52 " an entrepreneur, inventor, film producer and major benefactor of the University.

“With the design of the Kanbar Center we’ve created a social crossroads and a heart for a campus that had long been divided by topography. Giving the University this transparent centerpiece allows its community to flourish. By creating a place for all students and faculty to interact, the dynamic of the university community can shift beyond a departmental scale to one that embraces the university as a whole.”
