Shepley Bulfinch, Office and Design Studio (Boston)
Boston, MA | 2006
Shepley Bulfinch's LEED-certified offices emphasize creativity, sustainability, and transparency. Many elements of the open plan are flexible and can be easily adapted to accommodate changing requirements of staff and projects. The design incorporates a large, open meeting space (the Living Room) for company-wide meetings, continuing education programs, and other events; a kitchen, model shop, print room, and a range of open and enclosed meeting areas. Each corner of the office is anchored by team meeting spaces flanked by smaller meeting rooms. Ample wall space is provided for displaying current and past projects, as well as works from in-house design charettes. The office features wireless capability throughout.
Shepley Bulfinch deployed the same sustainable design principles that it uses in its work with clients. The office received LEED-CI (Commercial Interior) Silver certification in 2007, and is among the first architectural offices in the US to be so recognized. Certification was based on a number of design and construction features, including: energy performance; use of low-emitting materials; indoor pollutant source controls; bicycle storage and shower facilities; proximity to amenities and public transportation; collection of recyclables; and daylight and view, with windows wrapping the office.
Following the firm's long-standing tradition of occupying spaces of its own design, the office is located in the World Trade Center East Building, a Shepley Bulfinch building completed in 2000.
