Wabash College, Student Housing
Crawfordsville, IN | 2016
To significantly elevate the quality and quantity of student housing at Wabash College, this phased project helps the small Indiana men's school position itself competitively for a planned increase in enrollment. Each component of the project, which includes the renovation of Martindale Hall and the construction of six new residences, responds to its immediate campus environment: duplex-style townhomes face a residential street; traditional residential halls and lodges open onto a new campus lawn; and Martindale Hall's new glass entrance connects students with the adjacent campus arboretum. In five-story Martindale Hall, a moveable media wall in the Living Room provides flexibility for different activities within the space, and a two-story light-colored limestone fireplace anchors the surrounding open space. In the West Campus Residential District's six new buildings, a series of gathering spaces guide residents from the privacy of the dorm rooms to progressively more public living rooms, which in turn connect to outdoor gathering plazas, paths and green spaces nestled around the individual buildings. The housing project implements Wabash College's campus master plan, which was completed by Shepley Bulfinch.
