Refreshing a legacy

Lehigh University,
University Center

Bethlehem, PA
The transformative renovation and addition to the University Center at Lehigh University conveys a graceful nod to the institution’s past, and a bold gesture to the school’s future.
A new north-south campus connector marks a central gathering space for students. The glass-walled pavilion on the Center’s south side will serve as a campus ‘living room,’ featuring open and flexible destination event space.
High atop a hill overlooking the town of Bethlehem and the Lehigh Campus, the Lehigh University Center—with its towering spire—has welcomed students and visitors for more than 150 years. In the coming years, Shepley Bulfinch will perform a complete overhaul and significant expansion of the landmark Victorian building’s infrastructure, carefully preserving and refreshing cherished legacy spaces.

The renovation and addition infuses new life into Lehigh’s underutilized student center, as a place for community and connection at the epicenter of the steeply graded campus.
Approximately half of the Center will be devoted to food and dining, including a bakery, catering services, and all-you-can-eat dining options.
