Meet the summer interns

This National Intern Day, we wanted to share a little about our 2021 summer interns. We asked them what they love about working at Shepley Bulfinch, what they’ve been working on all summer, and the traditional rapid fire Q+A.

BArch Candidate at the University of Houston, College of Architecture and Design

What are projects are you currently working on and what is your involvement in them?
I am currently working on the Georgetown University Law Campus (GULC) project! I have been primarily drafting area plans as well as building a campus model in Revit with my team.

What is your favorite part about working at Shepley Bulfinch?
My favorite part about working at Shepley Bulfinch is the accessibility at the firm; I have never felt intimidated to reach out when I need help – the Revit Buddy program at Shepley has been a favorite resource of mine!

Why did you choose Shepley Bulfinch for your internship program?
I chose to intern at Shepley Bulfinch because I had a growing interest in academic, education, and library-type projects. In retrospect, I am glad that I pursued an internship at Shepley Bulfinch, through my involvement with the GULC project I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the inner-discussions for campus development.

What are your long-term architecture goals?
My long-term architecture goals beyond getting licensed likely involves some level of research into sustainable architecture. I don’t quite think the field is ready to tackle the 2030 challenge. Also, I sometimes dream of teaching architecture, but that’s only a thought at the moment!

Rapid fire Q+A:

  1. Favorite style of architecture: Brutalism
  2. Favorite building: Calgary new Central Library by Snohetta
  3. Favorite ice cream/food: Vanilla Bean ice-cream
  4. Pets? I have one dog, she’s a Maltese-Pomeranian mix!
  5. What’s something no one would guess about you? I reorganize my room/apartment every half-year, not for feng-shui, but because I like being in new environments.
  6. Dream project? (past or present) A dream project would involve some form of grand master planning (ie; master planning for an urban center).

What are projects are you currently working on and what is your involvement in them?
I am currently helping out with the Mayo Clinic East Expansion, recording progress and updating a book for the project. I have also been able to join site walks for the X Phoenix project and assist in field reports.

What is your favorite part about working at Shepley Bulfinch?
My favorite part about working at Shepley is the collaborative work environment and the value it places in teams. Seeing the welcomed interaction between all the offices has highlighted the advantage of having an open exchange of ideas and promotes building beyond previous endeavors.

Why did you choose Shepley Bulfinch for your internship?
I chose to have my internship at Shepley Bulfinch because I wanted to gain experience in multiple design sectors and join a team that explores new opportunities in challenging current design processes.

What are your long-term architecture goals?
After earning my Masters degree at ASU, my goal is to become licensed and discover the design sector I’m more passionate about. I hope to work towards implementing inclusive, collaborative spaces in future design projects.

Rapid fire Q+A:

  1. Favorite style of architecture: Metamodern architecture
  2. Favorite building: Markey Hall | MVRDV
  3. Favorite ice cream/food: Jeni’s Brown Butter Almond Brittle Ice Cream
  4. What’s something no one would guess about you? 5) I’m a big fan of horror movies and spooky things! I always over decorate for Halloween.
  5. Dream project? (past or present) Dream project would be to design a social housing community, similar to Alejandro Aravena’s Half a House, probably in the Philippines.

What are projects are you currently working on and what is your involvement in them?
I am currently working on the revitalization of McGill University’s McLennan-Redpath complex, also known as Fiat Lux. It is an internationally recognized research library spanning three buildings and a century of architecture. The project is currently on its conceptual design phase therefore it is at a fast-paced design intensive period. Here, I have been able to participate in the design conversations that range from general massing forms to detailed space layouts. I am mostly involved by helping through the development of the 3D model and the drawings that are produced for each meeting.

What is your favorite part about working at Shepley Bulfinch?
My favorite part would be the collaborative aspect of working at Shepley. I have often been inspired by how the design develops from the conversations that bounce off of every team member resulting in a well thought out and refined solution.

Why did you choose Shepley Bulfinch for your internship program?
I had worked at Shepley as a Design Technology Specialist prior to attending graduate school. While I was working at Shepley then, I was mainly employing my knowledge of design related technologies to provide support to teams within Shepley. I also worked on transforming the firm’s technological approaches to meet current and future challenges. That, however, also meant that I didn’t get to work on design projects that I found very inspiring throughout my time as a Design Technology Specialist. Therefore, my eagerness and aspiration to work with in Shepley projects made me choose Shepley for my internship this summer.

What are your long-term architecture goals?
I want to be able to use architecture along with urban planning as a tool to address many social, economic, and cultural questions within the world. By facing the challenges of the architecture industry, I hope to contribute to the development of the field to my maximum ability.

Rapid fire Q+A:

  1. Favorite style of architecture: Contemporary
  2. Favorite building: Bete Giyorgis (Church of Saint George, Lalibela)
  3. Favorite ice cream/food: Vanilla and chocolate
  4. What’s something no one would guess about you? I have been writing a book for about a year now.
  5. Dream project? (past or present) I’m still exploring my interests, but I have been extremely enjoying working on an education building this summer
