Plan and deliver

Boston Children’s Hospital,
Institutional Master Plan
Boston, MA

The Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) master plan addressed long-term strategies for healthcare service delivery on the hospital’s highly constrained main campus in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area.
Of particular focus was BCH’s Heart Center. Although ranked #1 in the country, it was missing adequate facilities to support its success, limiting its ability to grow and operate efficiently. The Heart Center was located on four floors of five different buildings on the campus. The Master Plan recommended consolidating all outpatient, procedural, acute, and critical care into one building–the Hale Family Clinical Building, which is currently under construction.
This Master Plan focused on responding to the hospital’s continuing growth in patient volume and its delivery of high-level tertiary and quaternary care, specifically addressing the need for single patient rooms and rebranding BCH’s Core Services. The plan incorporated strategies for improving the patient and family experience, including the provision of safer and more direct access to the hospital.
BCH’s Green Space Master Plan was initiated to complement the new Hale Family Clinical Building, providing 25% more green and open space and allowing for a diversity of gardens to engage the entire BCH community. The master plan aims to create a variety of indoor and outdoor gardens that range from contemplative sanctuaries to safe play environments with positive distractions to reduce stress for patients and families. The vision for the 28,000 sf of new green spaces—including ground level, interior, and roof gardens—promotes the concepts of hope, freedom, play, rejuvenation, and contemplation to create an innovative healing environment that is a “hospital within a garden.”
