A Place Built for Children

John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital
Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo
Buffalo, NY

The John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital increases efficiency and creates new opportunities for the Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.
The 12-story Hospital includes six floors of beds above a diagnostics and treatment base with a mid-building family amenities.
Located in the heart of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the new facility broadens critical care services and improves the services of the Neuroscience Center. Shepley Bulfinch also completed fit-out for a 100,000-sf Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center, which adjoins the Oishei Children’s Hospital.
The Oishei Children’s Hospital is a teaching hub for the University of Buffalo Medical School. An ‘academic collaborative zone’ on each of the clinical floors fosters multidisciplinary care and teaching.
The replacement hospital integrates Women & Children’s into the Kaleida Health and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, as well as the University of Buffalo’s new medical school.
The massing of the building fans from the street edge as it transitions from the podium to the tower, creating ‘a hanging garden’ effect on the south facade.
Found space in the southern corner of the fifth floor provides respite and sanctuary for patients, families, and staff. Amenities include a winter garden, meditative roof garden, and chapel.
