Shepley Bulfinch to Expand the Universidad de los Andes Medical Campus
BOSTON (December 4, 2023) Shepley Bulfinch, a national architecture firm with studios in Boston, Durham, Hartford, Houston and Phoenix, is excited to announce that the Universidad de los Andes in Santiago, Chile has selected the firm to design the second phase of their medical campus. The 150,000 sf, 5-story tower expansion comes only ten years after the opening of the first phase of construction and conceptual design by Shepley Bulfinch due to the hospital’s success since the initial opening. The new work continues the university and architectural firm’s long-term partnership and will allow for continued growth and development.
Founded in 1989, the Universidad de los Andes is a private catholic-inspired higher learning institution dedicated to non-profit education, research, and assistance activities. In 2005, Shepley Bulfinch collaborated with the Universidad de los Andes to design the first phase of the new hospital. The second phase will include two floors of beds (24 beds/floor), one floor of exam/consultation that may be converted to inpatient functions in the future, a major outpatient surgery suite, and one floor of support services. Renovation includes a revitalized Endoscopy suite, Family Lounge, and new spaces for Perioperative care, Cardiac catheterization, and Cardiac electrophysiology. Located in one of the most earthquake prone countries in the world, the hospital is designed to be earthquake resilient, utilizing two underground levels for parking.
Conceptual design work is underway, with the project slated to be completed by the end of 2023.
