A Factory of Scientific Knowledge

Biological Laboratories
Harvard University
Boston, MA

Completed in 1932, Harvard University’s Biological Laboratories creates a distinctive space for scientific exploration.

Notable for its functional design and modern Georgian style, the building has been described as an “architectural monument to Henry Ford” due to its efficient, factory-like appearance. While the laboratory is an example of straightforward and efficient design and construction, the effectiveness of the decorative elements is also noteworthy. Distinctive features of the building include intricate grillwork on the three main doors, representing the flora and fauna of the sea, air, and earth, as well as sunken relief sculptures of animals around the brick façade. These elements were created in partnership with Katherine Lane Weems.

The project exemplifies the firm’s early development of ideas in architectural detailing and design efficiency.
