2020 AIA COTE Top Ten: Austin Central Library
In 2020, the American Institute of Architects’ COTE® Top Ten program celebrated its 24th year and highlighted projects that met the AIA Committee on the Environment’s rigorous criteria for social, economic, and ecological value. Shepley Bulfinch’s design for the Austin Central Library was recognized in the program.

A Lake | Flato – Shepley Bulfinch joint venture, the new Central Library pays homage to two big ideas: Austin’s love affair with books and with nature. The design features rainwater harvesting, an in-ground cistern, and the building’s vegetated roof work together to reduce water usage. A photovoltaic cell generates 13% of the building’s power and shades the rooftop garden. The Library uses 40% less energy than a building of comparable size.
