Their session, “Turning deferred maintenance into transformation: Renewing a student center and a library without expanding,” explores case studies in two beloved but aging campus landmarks—Lehigh University’s Clayton University Center and Wellesley College’s Clapp Library—whose deferred maintenance becoming a catalyst for transformation rather than a liability.

Together, the team will share how the renewal projects took the buildings’ existing footprints from underutilized and under-performing to flexible, student-centered spaces. They demonstrate how adaptive reuse preserved architectural character while modernizing systems and advanced decarbonization goals.
