Pediatric hospitals care for a very vulnerable population: sick children and their families. As such, the design was developed to carefully integrate clinical needs in an inclusive, safe environment in which all are welcome. The design team engaged over four hundred users to address the multi-faceted needs of the hospital and its community through workshops and high-fidelity mock-ups.
Some of the decisions that promote inclusion are an accessible toilet and shower in every patient room, provision for meditative and respite space that caters to a variety of cultural backgrounds, and collocating family break rooms with indoor gardens to promote connection among families. The variety of green spaces within the hospital not only serves as respite zones for patients, family, staff, but also other visitors and employees of the broader Longwood Medical Community.
