2025 Boston Preservation Alliance Achievement Award: Countway Library
The Boston Preservation Alliance recognized Harvard Medical School’s Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine with a Preservation Achievement Award.
When it comes to preservation, it is the story of people that make places special and this year’s award recipients are central in telling that story.

In 2019, Harvard Medical School engaged Shepley Bulfinch to design a comprehensive renovation of Countway Library. Harvard Medical School’s Countway Library was transformed from an inward looking, brutalist building into an outwardly engaging 21st century library. By reinvigorating the interior experience and services, along with the addition of collaborative environments and community-focused amenities, the design addressed the shifting role of medical and health sciences libraries in today’s education.
While the original interior organization focused on its physical collections, the renovation aimed to expand user spaces, including areas for collaboration, inspiration, quiet concentration, and technology-rich environments. A new pedestrian bridge and integrated ADA ramps were introduced, improving accessibility and reconnecting Countway to the surrounding community. The renovation also addressed greenhouse gas reductions, healthy materials initiatives, and documentation on building product disclosures, indoor air quality, and a 35% water use reduction, achieving LEED-CI v4 Silver certification. This renovation revitalized a treasured piece of the medical community.
