3B: The Role of Pharmacy within a Broader Interdisciplinary Research Environment
Join Principal Jeffery Bottomley, AIA, and Principal and Executive Vice President of Practice Strategy Luke Voiland, AIA, LEED AP, at the 2025 Lab Design Conference. They will be joined by Dr. Lamar Pritchard from the University of Houston to discuss our role in realizing the College of Pharmacy’s vision for educating the next generation of pharmacists and researchers.

Modern pharmacy labs are equipped with advanced technologies that enhance research capabilities in fields like pharmacogenomics, drug discovery, and toxicology. Acting as a central hub, pharmacy fosters collaboration between biology, chemistry, and medicine, driving innovation across multiple scientific fields. Our collaboration with the University of Houston highlights the importance of pharmacy’s integration with other disciplines, such as bioinformatics, molecular biology, and clinical sciences, to develop comprehensive approaches to health challenges.
In the design of the UH Health & Biomedical Sciences Building, our team emphasized flexible lab spaces that adapt to evolving research needs and methodologies. Key design elements such as natural light and strategic wayfinding were integrated to improve the research environment and promote well-being. This presentation will review how innovative space weaves academic, clinical, and community areas to support interprofessional education and collaborative care delivery, creating a dynamic setting for interdisciplinary success in pharmacy and biomedical research.
Learning outcomes will include:
- Context: Discover the role of pharmacy within the broader landscape of healthcare professions, and how their academic labs are similar and different.
- Collaboration: Discuss how researchers are collaborating, why they are not collaborating, and how facility design influences these actions.
- Staying Adaptable: Learn how flexibility is key to interdisciplinary research and continuous innovation.
- Industry Trends: Understand the macro and micro trends that influenced the realization of University of Houston’s Health and Biomedical Sciences Building 2, and how these trends can be applied in other lab projects.
This presentation will be held Monday, May 12, 2025 at 1:30PM MDT. Register for 2025 Lab Design Conference to attend.
