Design strategies honor the library’s modernist architectural origins while reimagining its role as a vibrant, multi-dimensional destination for the BU community. The proposed renovation is set to transform the library into a dynamic hub that supports the university’s academic mission.

We are excited to embark on this journey to revitalize Mugar Library, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of the Boston University community for years to come.

Preservation and Adaptation

Mugar Library occupies a prominent position within Boston University’s Josep Lluís Sert-designed modernist precinct. The design team is navigating the delicate balance of preserving Sert’s original design intentions while adapting the library in service of BU’s mission: keeping research, scholarship, artistic creation, and professional practice accessible to all and in service of the wider community. Guided by Sert’s architectural philosophy of integrating buildings within their urban context, the renovation will reorient the library’s most active spaces to enhance views and connections to the city and the Charles River, with consideration for the adjacent law library expansion. The renovation approach aims to strengthen library programs, enhance the spatial experience, address deferred maintenance, and upgrade infrastructure to be more sustainable and resilient.

A Welcoming Entrance and Enhanced Accessibility

The design seeks to revitalize first impressions of the building through the reinvigoration of Mugar’s main entrance pavilion facing Commonwealth Avenue, which is the main spine of the BU campus. This inviting space is planned to welcome and engage the community while enhancing the library’s presence on campus and showcasing the library’s central role in promoting innovative research, scholarship, and student life.

A Network of Resources for Research and Learning

The vision for the renewal of Mugar provides expanded places for research and learning activities of all types. BU researchers will be better able to engage in digital research, collaboration, and creation; tap into the wealth of the University’s special collections; breathe new life into the intellectual heart of the campus community. Moreover, the renewal design creates a variety of spaces for learning, reflection, collaboration, and wellness. Special collections will be highlighted, including the celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., archives, through design concepts that support the stewardship of BU’s most distinctive collections while fostering expanded engagement with them through research, events, and exhibitions.
