Transforming history into a modern research hub

David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library
Duke University
Durham, NC

The extensive renovation of the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library has breathed new life into Duke University’s historic Perkins Library. This project has transformed the library into a state-of-the-art facility for research, archives, displays, and events, significantly elevating the visibility of Duke’s expansive special collections.

The project reactivates the library’s most historic elements, including the restoration of the 1928 Gothic stair tower, the reimagining of Biddle as a special exhibit space, and the revitalization of the second-floor Gothic Reading Room. The main floor Research Room and consultation rooms, flanked by galleries, seminar rooms, and event spaces, seamlessly connect the historic Gothic entrance with the Perkins and Bostock Libraries.

The new stack core features humidity control, UV-free LED lighting, cold storage, and compact shelving. Energy-efficient fixtures and light and motion sensors optimize energy performance. This thoughtful design ensures that the library remains a central hub for research and learning at Duke University.

The Rubenstein Library renovation not only preserves the rich history of Duke University but also provides a modern, energy-efficient space for future generations of researchers and scholars. This project completes the transformation of the Perkins Library Complex, solidifying its place at the heart of this prestigious research institution
