Transparency in legal education

Duke Law School
Duke University
Durham, NC

The addition and renovation of Duke University’s Law School captures the architectural essence unique to the program’s identity.

Conceptualized as a transparent and open connection to campus, this project included the creation of Star Commons and the renovation of the Goodson Library, opening up the previously inward-facing Law School to the rest of the Duke campus. The design features a light-filled commons that reinforces the school’s sense of community and includes glass-wrapped spaces with mezzanine and classroom levels overlooking the three-story area. The project encompasses approximately 115,000-sf and is LEED certified, highlighting sustainable design elements.

Shepley Bulfinch was the executive architect for the Duke University Law School addition and renovation project completed in 2008.
