An Oasis in the Pediatric Desert

Children’s Hospital
Intermountain Health
Las Vegas, NV

Building a new model for pediatric care in a state ready for transformation.

Nevada has long been one of the largest metropolitan regions in the country without a dedicated, full‑service children’s hospital—a gap that has led many Nevada families to travel hundreds of miles for complex pediatric care during their most vulnerable moments. Intermountain Health’s new stand‑alone comprehensive children’s hospital answers this need. Located at University of Nevada Las Vegas’s Harry Reid Research and Technology Park, in southwest Las Vegas, the hospital represents a rare opportunity to redefine pediatric care in a historically underserved region.

Shepley Bulfinch and Gensler have been selected as design partners following an extensive national search. This marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to create a purpose‑built environment that supports world‑class clinical care, attracts top pediatric specialists, and strengthens Nevada’s healthcare infrastructure for decades to come.

With groundbreaking anticipated in late 2026 and opening planned for 2030, the project is both a milestone and a promise: that children in Nevada will finally have access to the care they deserve, close to home.

A Transformative Vision Rooted in Community Need

A comprehensive statewide needs assessment confirmed what families and providers had long experienced firsthand: Nevada is a pediatric healthcare desert, with one of the lowest pediatrician‑to‑patient ratios in the nation and limited access to subspecialty care. Intermountain Health’s response is not incremental. It is foundational.

The new hospital is conceived as a holistic pediatric ecosystem, integrating inpatient, outpatient, and specialty services in a single, seamless environment. This approach will eliminate the fragmentation common in older hospital campuses and support real‑time collaboration among care teams. Horizontal alignment—placing key services on the same floor—will create intuitive pathways for families and efficient workflows for clinicians, to reduce stress and improve outcomes.

Planning for Children, Families, and the People Who Care for Them

From the earliest planning stages, the design team engaged deeply with physicians, nurses, and staff across Southern Nevada. These small‑group sessions surfaced not only clinical insights but also the emotional and cultural dimensions of caregiving—stories that shaped the design in meaningful ways.

The resulting vision prioritizes:

  • Integrated centers of excellence that bring multidisciplinary teams together
  • Family‑centered environments that reduce anxiety and support healing
  • Spaces for staff respite and renewal, recognizing that caregiver well‑being is essential to exceptional care
  • Flexible, future‑ready planning that adapts to evolving pediatric needs

Children themselves contributed through creative engagement activities, collaging their hopes for a hospital that feels welcoming, joyful, and uniquely theirs.

A Catalyst for Regional Growth and Healthcare Leadership

Beyond its clinical mission, the hospital is projected to generate significant economic impact, with hundreds of millions of dollars in construction‑related activity and long‑term job creation across the region. More importantly, it serves as a recruitment beacon—an environment intentionally designed to attract and retain the pediatric specialists Nevada has struggled to keep.

As Intermountain Health leaders have emphasized, building from scratch allows the team to create a model of care aligned with how today’s clinicians want to practice and how families deserve to experience healthcare.

A New Chapter for Nevada’s Children

Intermountain Health’s stand‑alone children’s hospital is more than a building. It is a commitment to rewriting the story of pediatric care in Nevada—one that keeps families close, strengthens the healthcare workforce, and elevates the standard of care statewide.

By uniting visionary planning, community partnership, and design excellence, the project sets the stage for a healthier future for every child in the region.
