Healthcare that Rises Above

Mayo Clinic
East Expansion
Phoenix, AZ

A 330,000-sf hospital and clinic renovation and expansion resulting in a new high-rise tower prioritizes innovation, longevity, and the highest level of care through a Big Room design approach.

Born from a comprehensive master plan, the East portion of this major expansion project in Phoenix is part of an overarching campus-wide growth strategy aimed at boosting the growth of Mayo Clinic’s clinical and surgical capacity over time.

The goal was to create a beautiful, high functioning expansion that met budget and schedule while maintaining the aesthetic of the existing Clinic and Hospital buildings while planning for longevity and future campus growth.

Vertical Expansion

The three-story vertical expansion of the Mayo Clinic’s Outpatient Clinic Building sets the stage for integrated and convenient patient care. One floor focuses on cardiovascular and neurosciences, while a second floor supports the nationally ranked transplant and pulmonary program. A third floor is shell space supporting future clinic growth.

Horizontal Expansion

A second part of the effort included a horizontal expansion of the logistics platform, surgical suite, and perioperative services, as well as an expansion of both staff and visitor dining and serveries.

Supporting Patients by Elevating Staff

Through the use of a Big Room approach, the team came together to create an on-site environment to enable better team communication and collaboration necessary to work out the complicated design and constructability details. During weekly quality assurance meetings, issues and challenges were quickly assessed and answered by the multi-disciplinary team. This innovative process greatly reduced the number of RFIs on the project. In fact, over the course of construction there were only 38 formal RFIs realized, representing significant cost and time savings compared to traditional projects.
