One hospital, two campuses

Master Planning at the Saint Raphael Campus
New Haven, CT
The Saint Raphael Campus Master Plan provided opportunities for Yale New Haven Hospital’s growth initiatives and department expansions, allowing it to transform from a single hospital into a dual-facility campus.
With a commitment to forging a new identity for the Saint Raphael Campus that complements the YNHH system and standardizes space and systems, a series of departmental and campus master plans determined key clinical initiatives on the smaller campus and identified facility investments to support those initiatives over the next decade. An Infrastructure Assessment was also completed, detailing the extent of existing concerns and costs of upgrades.
The Saint Raphael Hospital, acquired by Yale New Haven Health (YNHH) in 2012, provides the academic medical center with a new opportunity to expand and address key clinical initiatives. Located less than a half mile from the 1,000-bed academic medical center (now referred to as the York Street Hospital), the 500-bed Saint Raphael Hospital is now part of a two-hospital campus in downtown New Haven.
This “exploded axonometric” illustrates that with the hospital’s existing patient flow, cardiac patients travel a convoluted path for cardiac catheterization and stress testing. While the process was understood by staff, the diagram highlights the need to relocate stress testing and streamline patient flow.
These planning efforts have identified multiple initiatives for YNHH, including the Neurosciences and Stroke, Musculoskeletal, and Heart and Vascular programs, as well as phased renovation and growth of the OR platform, Diagnostic Radiology, and Emergency Department. A new inpatient neurosciences tower and additional parking are in the early phases of design.
